Reminder: EPA Biennial Hazardous Waste Report Due March 1, 2026

Federal and state hazardous waste regulations require certain RCRA hazardous waste generators and facilities that treat, store, or dispose of RCRA hazardous waste to report their activities biennially. The deadline is March 1, 2026.

Reminder: EPA Biennial Hazardous Waste Report Due March 1, 2026

Purpose of the Biennial Report

The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) share a mission to protect human health and the environment. They enforce strict management standards for hazardous wastes and gather information about generation, management, treatment, storage, transportation, and final disposition of hazardous waste in the state.

Federal and state hazardous waste regulations require certain federally regulated (RCRA) hazardous waste generators, as well as facilities that treat, store, or dispose of RCRA hazardous waste, to report their hazardous waste activities biennially in odd-numbered calendar years.

The information collected will:

  • Provide the U.S. EPA and DTSC with insight into current hazardous waste generation and management in the United States
  • Demonstrate trends and changes in waste management and quantity when compared to previous years' reports
  • Be summarized and provided to the public, primarily through publication of the National Biennial RCRA Hazardous Waste Report

Filing Requirements

If your facility generated, stored, treated, or disposed of hazardous waste above regulatory thresholds in 2025, you may be required to submit a Biennial Report to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control by March 1, 2026.

The report includes: waste quantities, waste codes and management methods, disposal/recycling destinations, and generator status.
