Seismic Retrofitting: Safeguarding Your Building and Environment with Citadel EHS

California requires seismic retrofitting for older structures. Before any structural improvements, addressing hazardous materials is critical. Citadel EHS provides a four-step approach to ensure safe and compliant seismic upgrades.

Seismic Retrofitting: Safeguarding Your Building and Environment with Citadel EHS

Understanding Seismic Retrofitting and Why It's Critical

Following California's 1994 earthquake devastation, the state enacted seismic retrofitting requirements. This process involves reinforcing buildings to withstand intense shaking, reducing the risk of collapse or severe damage. This is particularly vital for older structures built before current seismic codes were established.

The Necessity of Seismic Retrofitting

Cities including Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Beverly Hills enforce strict seismic retrofit deadlines. Los Angeles County has identified approximately 1,700 buildings requiring seismic retrofit work.

Citadel EHS's Four-Step Approach

Step 1: Structural Drawing Review — Before physical work begins, Citadel EHS conducts thorough reviews of existing structural drawings and design documents to identify areas containing Environmental Regulated Materials (ERMs) like asbestos and lead-based paints.

Step 2: Intrusive Materials Inspection and Testing — Hands-on intrusive inspections, opening building sections to examine framing and conduct materials testing. Comprehensive surveys complying with regulations from local Air Pollution Control Districts, Cal-OSHA, and California's Department of Public Health.

Step 3: Comprehensive ERM Survey Post-Design — After initial intrusive work and retrofit design finalization, an extensive ERM survey examines all retrofit-impacted areas, ensuring appropriate ERM management during construction.

Step 4: ERM Abatement for Clean Retrofit Installation — If ERMs are found in structural member finishes or coatings, abatement must precede seismic upgrade installation. Citadel EHS oversees removal and conducts post-abatement clearances.
