RESTORING & EXPANDING A HISTORICAL LANDMARK: GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY

In the early 2000s the operators of Griffith Observatory approached us with a massive undertaking: to expand the observatory’s offerings with a new planetarium theater, a new underground theater (eventually named “The Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon”), 11,000 square feet of new exhibit space, a new gift shop, a new cafeteria, plus more—all while restoring the historical building’s original foundation..

Our BSCi team of Environmental, Health and Safety experts collaborated with Los Angeles A&E Firm, HPPA, in lead paint and hazardous materials abatement work , plus a floor-to-ceiling restoration of the interior, installing new plumbing, air conditioning, and electrical services. The result was a full hazardous materials survey, air monitoring , plus bringing the entire building to code and ADA compliance without losing out on the original art deco charm and foundation.
